Scroll Mummy

A scroll mummy is crafted from the remains of damaged, destroyed, or minor magic items bound together into the form of a humanoid, wrapped in scrolls and pages torn from spellbooks, then animated with the soul of a captured lich. In order to achieve this, the lich must be destroyed and the object it’s bound its soul to collected and used in the crafting of the scroll mummy, which seals the lich away and prevents its normal rejuvenation. If the scroll mummy is destroyed, this releases the lich’s soul and allows it to rejuvenate again.

Very few mages have the knowledge on how to craft a scroll mummy, and even fewer the strength necessary to do so as it requires overcoming a lich and capturing its soul. Within the Vale, the mages of Saruun who live in an ancient ruin below the Thunderspire Mountain that connects to the Underdark have discovered a number of ancient scroll mummies, some bound with even more powerful spells than the ones on the sample stat blocks above, as well as the secret on how to craft more. Many of these scroll mummies are marked with names or titles, possibly those of the lich bound to them or perhaps just a fanciful name given to the construct itself as a way of mocking the animating soul.

5th Edition

Each scroll mummy an cast a single spell of each level from level 1 to 5. The sample stat block has a standard list of spells, but if you’d like to customize each scroll mummy’s stat block with a different set feel free to. Especially powerful scroll mummies may have access to a 6th or higher level spell as well, though that may boost its CR. Consider your party and their abilities before doing so2E

13th Age

The Lich King knows the secrets to crafting a soul mummy, and being bound into one is among the worst forms of punishment a member of the undying peerage may be subjected to. Those who complete a long term of service as a construct may be forgiven their crimes however, and allowed to return to their previous status, though generally the centuries or millennia of imprisonment means they are far behind the modern political landscape of the Lich King’s court.
