Traveler! Centuries ago, a foul necromancer developed a technique for distilling souls and containing them in canals of oil. The souls would remain usable indefinitely for as long as the canals’ pumps would work. This process allowed him to pour hundreds of souls of innocent townsfolk into the waterways of his laboratory. The amount of contained life energy there was nothing to joke at. Alas, the doomed necromancer fell into the pools one day, by accident, and ended his own life.
Today, at least half the pumps have failed from disrepair and the tormented souls flowing in the oil have taken physical form. The oil-doused abominations emerge from the laboratory and climb up to the city surface. The local authorities and valiant individuals that defend the city cannot outlast the endless wave of oil monsters. Adventurers are needed!
This is a level 6 adventure with a bit of exploration, dungeon-crawling in a dangerous laboratory, and access to a powerful necromancy artifact. Here’s a low-def preview of this illustration:
Here’s a close-up of the central pool of soul-infused acid. The oil-doused monstrosities climb out of this pool to attack any living beings nearby. They know nothing but torment and pain. These souls can only be helped by fixing the laboratory and then blessing the pool.
Narrow canals of oil connect several areas within the dungeon. Traversing the narrow passages may cause one or more adventurers to become drenched in the foul-smelling oil.
