They had done the prudent thing, right? Camping outside of the temple until morning seemed like the right call. After all, if there was one thing her mother had passed to her from her own adventuring days, it was to trust her gut, and her gut had told her to wait until morning. Well, that wasn’t entirely true. What Aiden’s gut had actually been telling her since the moment they arrived in this small courtyard was to take her friends and go back home. But she knew what the rest of the crew’s reaction would be and if she had to hear one more undermining word from Nadira or see one more of Alex’s eye rolls she might kill them herself.
So instead, Aiden sat on watch while her friends slept, mulling over the strange poem that she’d been quietly obsessing over since Dina had read it from the base of one of the statues while they were securing their camp. Why had it filled her with such fear? She knew she wasn’t a coward, but the moment she had heard it a bell starting sounding in the back of her head and had only grown in intensity as she stared toward the temple’s entrance. Listening to her gut seemed out of the question now. Listening to anything but that strange, tolling dread actually seemed impossible. She grimaced and swallowed the remainder of her coffee, thankful for the momentary distraction the scalding liquid provided. It will all be better tomorrow, she thought.
As her mother always said, everything was better in the light of day.
